TABLE Announces Date for 8th Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser with Safety In Mind

Top Local Chefs Work with TABLE to Raise Funds to Feed Children with Delicious Food
in a “To Go” Format

Chapel Hill, N.C., September 30, 2020 – TABLE, an organization that provides emergency hunger relief to children in Orange County, announces its 8th Empty Bowls annual fundraising dinner will take place on Sunday, October 25, with a “carry out” format from 4:00 – 7:30pm. Tickets will go on sale Friday, October 2nd, at 12:00pm EST and will be available for purchase at https://tablenc.org/events/8th-annual-empty-bowls-fundraiser/.

Since schools closed in March, TABLE has delivered over 140,000 nutritious meals and snacks to kids in the Orange County community, with a specific focus on Chapel Hill and Carrboro. TABLE had to quickly adapt its hunger-relief programming to alleviate some of the many challenges kids and families in the community are experiencing and is now feeding more than 675 children every week.

“Over the last six months there have been a lot of changes in how we get meals to the kids in our community, but there is more need than ever,” says Ashton Tippins, Executive Director of TABLE. “We decided it’s important to continue to raise needed funds, but we wanted to do it in a safe way for our donors, our volunteers, and the amazing chefs that are helping us execute this event.”

This year, instead of attendees gathering together in one location, Empty Bowls will be a “to-go” event. Remaining true to the tradition, meal purchasers will be able to choose from several different soup offerings that can be ordered in servings of two or four. Each order will include the same number of servings of salad and bread. There will also be vegetarian and gluten-free options available. All orders will be packaged in environmentally-friendly to-go containers and purchasers will sign up for a time to pick up their dinner curb-side at the new Market & Moss restaurant, located in Southern Village at 700 Market Street, Chapel Hill, NC.

In years past, attendees have had the option to choose their pottery bowl in person. Due to logistical challenges, most will not have the opportunity to choose their individual bowl. If selected separately, as an add-on to the meal, TABLE staff will select and package bowls that will be packaged with their purchased meal.

However, TABLE is offering a limited number of “Hero Donor” packages that will allow purchasers to view and select bowls ahead of time online. Once chosen, the specific bowls will be tagged and set aside. The reserved pieces will be carefully packed in the bag with the purchaser’s chosen meal. In addition to the benefit of selecting specific pottery bowls, the “Hero Donor” meals will include a delicious dessert by Chapel Hill favorites Bill Smith and Nancie McDermott.

Other participating chefs have been featured on the Food Network, the James Beard House and Michelin lists, including Sera Cuni of The Root Cellar, Brandon Sharp of Hawthorne & Wood, Glenn Lozuke of Weaver Street Market, Teddy Diggs of Coronato Pizza, Jamil Kadoura of Mediterranean Deli, Baptist Knaven of Provence, Dave Gardner of Imagine That Gluten Free, and Bryan Keller of the new Market & Moss in Southern Village.

We also want to thank our generous sponsors including Wegmans Food Market, PNC, Grubb Properties, Jessica L. Villagrana, Edward Jones Investments, and C Jan Krause Counseling.
